Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month: Keeping the Community Aware with Izard Regional Hospital

Juvenile Arthritis refers to a group of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that affect children under 16. Unlike short-term joint pain caused by injury, JA is a chronic condition that can lead to long-term damage. Over 300,000 children in the U.S live with some form of juvenile arthritis, and early detection is key to protecting their long-term health.

In July, during Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, we focus on helping families recognize early signs- becoming prompt attention can significantly improve a child’s quality of life.

Symptoms and Early Signs:

Common Symptoms of Juvenile Arthritis:

  • Join swelling and pain
  • Morning stiffness
  • Warmth or redness in affected joints
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Unexplained fever
  • Eye inflammation

Early diagnosis can be challenging because children may not clearly express pain or discomfort, and symptoms like tiredness or fever can often be attributed to viral illnesses. Joint pain may also come and go, leading to delays in getting help.

Treatment Options:

While there is no set cure for juvenile arthritis, early treatment can help manage symptoms, prevent joint damage, and help children lead full lives.

Common Treatments:

  • NSAIDS: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • DMARDs: Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs
  • Biologics: Advanced medications that target a specific part of the immune system
  • Corticosteroids: Sometimes used short-term for flares or severe inflammation

Why July Matters:

July is a time to highlight the unique challenges children with arthritis face- and to support advances in care, research, and treatment.

Here is how you can get involved
